What these terms mean

Agency service lists all sound alike, so it is hard to tell what you would actually be getting. Here are all eighty-four of ours, in plain English.

Where something is usually oversold, we say so. A few you probably do not need, and one or two work against each other.

01 Strategy (for brand & business)

Brand strategy & positioning: The argument for choosing you rather than the obvious alternative. Positioning is really a decision about what you are willing to be worst at, which is the part most people skip, and it is why a strategy that offends nobody has usually decided nothing.
Category creation & reframing: Sometimes you are not losing your market, you are competing in the wrong one. Reframing moves the comparison so buyers ask a different question. It is slower than it sounds, and it collapses if there is no believable evidence that the new category exists.
Customer & market research: Talking to people who might buy the thing before you spend money telling them about it. Interviews tell you why, numbers tell you how many, and you need both. The most valuable finding is usually the one that irritates whoever commissioned the study.
Competitive & cultural analysis: Two different maps. One shows what everyone in your category is already saying, so you can stop saying it. The other shows what is actually moving in the culture your buyer lives in, which is rarely your category and is where the interesting angles come from.
Audience definition & personas: Deciding who you are for, and admitting who you are not for. Personas earned their bad reputation by becoming laminated cards with stock photography on them. Useful ones are a small number of real behaviours you can point at when someone asks who this is meant for.
Proposition development: The sentence a customer would use to describe you to a colleague when you are not in the room. If it needs a slide to survive, it is not finished.
Brand & portfolio architecture: How many brands you should have, what they are called, and how they relate to each other. Get it wrong and every launch restarts the same argument about whether this is a new brand or just a product. Get it right and the argument never happens again.
Naming architecture: The rules for naming things, decided before you need the next name. Not the names themselves. This is what stops a product line reading like six unrelated companies that merged badly.
Go-to-market strategy: How the thing reaches people who will pay for it: segments, channels, pricing, sequence, and who does what by when. Most go-to-market plans are a launch date with decoration around it. The useful version tells you what happens in week six.
Market entry & localisation: Arriving somewhere nobody has heard of you. Translation is the smallest part of it. What actually bites is the proof that does not travel, the channel that does not exist there, and the reference that means something entirely different once it lands.
Business & revenue model design: What you charge for, who pays, how often, and what it costs you to serve them. Brand work that skips this produces genuinely beautiful things that lose money on every unit sold.
Measurement design: Agreeing what would count as evidence before you begin, instead of hunting afterwards for a number that flatters the result. It is the least glamorous thing on this page and it settles more arguments than everything above it combined.

02 Identity (branding & design)

Visual identity systems: Not a logo. A logo is one asset; a system is the set of decisions that lets a hundred people make new things that still look like you. Type, colour, layout, image treatment, and the reasoning behind each, so the next person does not have to guess.
Design systems & governance: The same idea taken into software, where it has to survive dozens of engineers and several years. Components, tokens, and the boring but decisive question of who is allowed to change what. Systems fail on governance far more often than on design.
Art direction: The taste layer. Someone deciding what this specific photograph, film or page should feel like, and being accountable for it. It is the difference between work that is technically correct and work you remember.
Typography & custom lettering: Type does more identity work than any other element, and almost nobody notices it consciously, which is exactly why it works. Custom lettering is worth it when a licensed typeface cannot carry the thing you need, and a waste of money when it can.
Packaging & structural design: The only brand asset your customer physically holds. It has to survive a supply chain, a shelf, a courier and an unboxing, while remaining legible at arm’s length. Structure is the half people forget, and it is the half that fails.
Digital product design (UX/UI): Designing the thing people actually use rather than the page that advertises it. Flows, states, error cases, empty screens. The unglamorous states are where products are won, because that is where people are when they are closest to giving up.
Websites & commerce: The site as an instrument rather than a brochure: it should tell you what people came for and where they gave up. Speed and clarity beat cleverness here almost every time, which is a hard thing for a design studio to admit in writing.
Editorial & print: Books, reports, catalogues, things with a spine. Print is slower and less forgiving and cannot be edited after the fact, and those constraints are precisely why a printed object still reads as a commitment in a way a PDF never does.
Motion & 3D direction: How things move, and what that movement says. Motion is now part of identity rather than decoration on top of it, because most people meet your brand on a screen that is already moving. Restraint reads as confidence; everything easing everywhere reads as a template.
Sonic identity: What you sound like. A few notes, a texture, a voice. Underused by almost everyone, and disproportionately effective in a world of muted autoplay where the people who do unmute are the ones paying attention.
Environmental design & signage: Brand in physical space: an office, a store, a stand, a building. Wayfinding is the part with a right answer, and it is usually the part that has been left to whoever was free that week.
Photography & image direction: Deciding what your pictures are of, and who takes them. A consistent image world is the fastest way to look like one company rather than four, and the quickest way to look generic is to solve it with a stock library everyone else also subscribes to.

03 Story (content & creative)

Verbal identity & tone: How you sound in words, defined tightly enough that someone who has never met you can write as you. Most tone-of-voice documents are three adjectives and a mood board. A working one has real examples, including sentences you would never write.
Narrative & messaging architecture: The structure underneath everything you say: what the story is, in what order, and what each audience needs to hear first. Without it, six teams write six slightly different companies and nobody notices until a journalist quotes the wrong one.
Founder & executive voice: Helping a specific person sound like themselves in public, at volume. This is ghostwriting with the ghost kept deliberately faint. When it works nobody can tell we were involved, which makes it a difficult thing to show in a portfolio.
Naming & taglines: The actual names and lines. Naming is mostly a legal and linguistic elimination process wearing a creative costume: the good ones die in trademark search, and the survivor has to work in every market you sell in.
Copywriting across all surfaces: Every word a customer meets, from the homepage to the error message to the line on the invoice. The small surfaces are where tone is really tested, because that is where most companies stop paying attention and start sounding like software.
Editorial programming: Publishing on a rhythm rather than in bursts: what you write about, how often, and who owns it. Most content programmes fail on cadence rather than quality, and the failure looks like a blog with three posts from the same enthusiastic fortnight.
Film & documentary: Longer-form work with an actual story in it. Expensive, slow, and still the most persuasive thing you can make when the subject deserves it. It goes wrong when a film is commissioned to say something a paragraph could have said better.
Photography direction: Commissioning and running shoots so what comes back is usable, on brief, and cleared for the uses you actually need. The brief and the shot list do more for the result than the budget does.
Podcasts & audio: Audio buys you a listener’s attention for far longer than anything else on this list, which is remarkable, and it is a genuine commitment because a podcast nobody has updated since spring is worse than no podcast at all.
Reports, decks & whitepapers: Documents that argue something. Original research is the version that earns links, gets cited and keeps working for years; a lightly-branded summary of what everyone already knows is the version that does not.
Sales & recruiting narratives: The same story told to the two audiences who decide whether you grow: people who might buy, and people who might join. Companies usually invest heavily in the first and improvise the second, then wonder why hiring is hard.
Bilingual and multilingual authoring: Writing in more than one language properly, which means writing each one natively rather than translating and hoping. A translated joke is not a joke. This is the difference between a company that operates in a market and one that is visiting.

04 Reputation (PR & communications)

Communications strategy: Who needs to believe what about you, in what order, and what evidence would make that believable. Everything below this line is delivery. Skipping it is how companies end up with a great deal of coverage and no change in what anyone thinks.
Media relations & press office: Relationships with journalists, and the machinery to respond fast enough to be useful to them. Reporters need something true, specific and quotable before their deadline. Most press offices supply something approved, general and late.
Launch sequencing: The order things happen in during a launch, which matters more than any individual piece of it: embargoes, exclusives, the site going live, the customers who should hear before the press does. Sequencing errors are rarely recoverable.
Founder & executive visibility: Building a public profile for a person deliberately rather than accidentally. It compounds slowly and it is genuinely fragile, because a person can say something on a Tuesday that a decade of work does not survive.
Thought leadership programmes: A phrase that has been ruined by people with nothing to say. Done properly it means having a real position on something contested in your field, defending it in public, and being willing to be wrong. Done badly it is a LinkedIn post about resilience.
Analyst & influencer relations: The people whose opinion gets repeated by others. In business markets that means industry analysts whose reports appear in procurement decisions; in consumer markets it means creators. Same discipline, entirely different rhythm.
Creator & community strategy: Working with people who have their own audience, and with the audience you have built yourself. The mistake is treating creators as media inventory. They are collaborators with a reputation to protect, and the ones worth working with will say no.
Awards & speaking programmes: Stages and trophies. Worth doing where the audience is genuinely the right room, and a slow expensive vanity habit where it is not. We will tell you which is which, including when the answer is neither.
Investor & financial communications: Talking to people who are deciding whether to put money in or keep it in. A different register from marketing entirely: more precise, more conservative, and legally consequential in ways the rest of this list is not.
Issues, crisis & preparedness: The work you do before anything happens, which is most of it. A rehearsed team with a decided position responds in an hour. An unprepared one takes two days, and the two days become the story rather than the original problem.
Internal & change communications: Telling your own people first, and telling them properly. Every external message is read by employees too, and they are the audience most able to tell whether it is true. A rebrand your staff cannot explain has not launched.
Reputation measurement: Tracking whether what people believe about you is actually shifting, as opposed to counting how many articles mentioned your name. The two numbers move independently more often than anyone in this industry likes to admit.

05 Demand (marketing & growth)

Demand & lifecycle strategy: The plan for how strangers become customers and how customers stay. Most marketing plans cover the first half of that sentence properly and quietly assume the second. Retention is usually where the money actually is, and it is almost always somebody else’s job.
Performance creative: Advertising made to be measured. The unglamorous finding, repeated across the industry, is that the creative itself is a bigger lever than the targeting, and that the work which performs rarely resembles the work that wins prizes. You also need enough variations to learn anything at all.
Paid media planning & buying: Deciding where the money goes, then spending it. Planning decides whether it works; buying decides what it costs. An agency that only does the second half is selling you arithmetic.
Campaign platforms: One idea strong enough to carry a year of work across every channel, rather than a burst that has to be reinvented each quarter. Platforms are harder to sell internally precisely because they look like less activity.
CRM & retention: Email, lifecycle messaging, loyalty, and the whole business of talking to people who have already bought. Cheaper than acquisition by a wide margin, and reliably the least-resourced desk in the building.
SEO, GEO & content systems: Being findable. Search optimisation is the long-standing half. The newer half is being cited by AI assistants, which summarise rather than list, and therefore reward being specific, quotable and clearly attributed rather than merely keyword-rich. Both halves want the same underlying thing: something true to say that nobody else is saying.
Conversion & landing systems: The pages where intent becomes action, and the arithmetic underneath them. A modest improvement here multiplies every other line on this page, which is why it is usually the thing to fix before increasing the budget.
Partnerships & co-marketing: Borrowing somebody else’s audience honestly, by making something together that neither of you would have made alone. The version that fails is two logos on a banner and a shared press release.
Retail & channel activation: Making the thing sell where it is actually sold: shelves, distributors, marketplaces, resellers. Brand work that stops at the website has stopped one step short of the money.
Experimentation programmes: Running tests so they produce knowledge rather than opinions. The discipline is deciding what you would accept as a result before you look at it, and making peace with the fact that most tests come back flat.
Analytics, attribution & reporting: Working out what actually caused what, which has become genuinely harder as tracking has tightened and third-party cookies have gone. Honest modern attribution is a modelled estimate rather than a receipt, and anyone offering you certainty is selling something else.
Growth cadence & team coaching: The weekly rhythm that keeps all of this running after we leave: what gets reviewed, by whom, and what triggers a decision. It is the least exciting item here and it decides whether any of the rest survives its first quarter.

06 Experience (events & environments)

Experience design & spatial narrative: Deciding what somebody should feel, and in what order, as they move through a place. Storytelling with a floor plan. The common failure is designing the photograph rather than the visit.
Live events & brand worlds: Temporary places built to be spent time in. An enormous amount of effort for a short window, which is exactly why the plan for what survives it should exist before the doors open rather than after they close.
Exhibitions & scenography: Longer-running installations where objects and information have to share a room without shouting over one another. Pacing matters more than spectacle here, because people arrive with a finite amount of attention and it runs out faster than anyone plans for.
Retail & showroom environments: Space that has to sell something and also be pleasant to stand in. Those two goals conflict more often than retail design likes to admit, and resolving them is usually a decision about how long you want people to stay.
Installation & fabrication: Actually building and installing the physical thing. Where the drawing meets tolerances, load ratings, a loading bay that turns out to be narrower than the plan, and a lift somebody measured optimistically.
Technical design & show control: The systems that make a space do things on cue: triggers, sensors, timing, failover. Entirely invisible when it works. The real job is the failover, because something will fail at some point and the only question is whether anyone decided in advance what happens then.
Lighting, sound & interaction: Three disciplines that determine most of how a space feels and routinely get specified last. Lighting in particular does more emotional work than any surface material, for a fraction of what the surface material costs.
Venue scouting & management: Finding the right room and dealing with whoever owns it. Every venue has a constraint that is not in the brochure. Finding it early is worth considerably more than finding a cheaper venue.
Permitting, insurance & safety: The paperwork that decides whether the thing is legally allowed to open. Thoroughly unglamorous, occasionally the reason a project dies, and always cheaper to handle at the start than to discover four days out.
Vendor sourcing & production management: Finding people who can actually build it, then keeping them coordinated. A trusted supplier list takes years to assemble and is most of what an experienced producer is really selling you.
Capture, content & documentation: Filming and photographing it while it exists, because in a month the documentation is the only version anyone can see. It is the first line cut from a budget and the one most regretted afterwards.
Touring, licensing & afterlife: What happens after it closes. Can it travel, be licensed, be rebuilt elsewhere, be sold? Deciding this at the design stage costs almost nothing and changes what the whole thing is worth.

07 Production (thing-making & delivery)

Executive production: One named person accountable for the whole thing landing: the money, the schedule, the people, and the awkward conversations. If you cannot name that person on a project, the project does not have one.
Scope, schedule & budget control: The three things that move whenever any one of them moves. The job is not to prevent change, which is impossible, but to make the trade visible, so that a decision to add something is also visibly a decision about what it costs.
Film & photography production: Everything between an approved idea and finished footage: crew, casting, locations, permits, kit, insurance, lunch. Films are saved in pre-production. A shoot only ever spends what pre-production already decided.
Post-production & finishing: Edit, grade, sound, titles, delivery. Consistently underestimated, and the stage where a merely competent shoot can be rescued and a genuinely good one can be quietly ruined.
Motion, 3D & creative technology: Animation, CGI, real-time rendering, and a category of tools that keeps changing shape year to year. Genuinely powerful, and genuinely easy to spend a great deal of money on effects that nobody asked for and no one remembers.
Print & packaging production: Getting artwork onto a physical substrate, at volume, on time, at the right price. Stock, process and finish decide how the object feels in a hand, and how it feels in a hand is most of what packaging actually communicates.
Fabrication management: Running the workshops that build physical objects. Materials, tolerances, finishes, and the schedule consequences of one component being made in another country.
Rights, clearances & usage: Making sure you are permitted to use what you have made, where you want it, for as long as you want it. Usage rights are the most common unbudgeted cost on this entire page, and they expire without telling anyone.
Talent & music licensing: Contracting the people who appear in the work and the music behind it. Both are limited by territory and by time, and both cost substantially more to extend afterwards than to buy properly at the outset.
Contracts & vendor management: The paperwork with everyone you are paying. Boring right up until it is the only thing standing between you and a dispute, at which point it becomes the entire conversation.
QA & implementation oversight: Checking that what was designed is what actually got built, before anyone outside sees it. The gap between the two is always wider than expected, and nobody enjoys being the person whose job is to measure it.
Handover, training & governance: Leaving properly: the files, the rules, the training, and a written agreement about who decides what next. Work that the owners cannot maintain degrades within a year, and that is a failure of the handover rather than of the work.
